What Do You Want to See on phpBB Weekly?

Postby webmacster87 » 18 Nov 2007, 11:05

It sometimes gets difficult for David and I to come up with a great subject to talk about on phpBB Weekly. You know, we're still waiting for phpBB3 to come out to give us new ideas, sometimes the phpBB news gets slow, and we wind up with podcast planner's block. :write:

Now that's not to say that we're completely destitute for topics, and indeed, we have some great ideas that we want to do in the future. But, you know, when we're optimally doing about 50 shows a year, we, um, need more ideas.

So, with that long premise over, we want to ask you all what you would like to see on phpBB Weekly. We can't guarantee that we can accommodate every request, but it will certainly help to give us some more ideas for the show. So please, go ahead, don't be shy, share your opinions! We really appreciate it. :)

Hi Douglas,

I know this is not an easy one to handle, but I will bring it forward anyway :

  • Overall topic : What is going on between the projects Joomla and phpBBB ?
    • Meik asked David to be quiet at some time in a particular topic at http://www.phpbb.com about a bridge between Joomla and phpBB 3.0
    • There has been a meeting in London between some phpBB Group team members and (at least I suppose) some Joomla team members, and all I have found about that meeting is some pics of a Bertie in a bar sitting beside a Joomla cap [ :rotfl: ] - I may add, that I haven't followed up on this, so perhaps I have missed some info.

Basicly : As a podcaster you are also a journalist! :D - Please don't be a wimp on this - Everybody knows that this brings David in a very special situation because he has inside information - please just handle it by turning the upside down: You interview David! [For starters] - give us more! - Simple as that! ;)

- Just so cool with this communication - no other media ask the users what to go for this way ;) :good:

Sometime in December (date not confirmed), we're going to bring on the actual Joomla developers to tell us themselves. :D David also briefly mentioned what's going on between Joomla and phpBB during last Saturday's episode #039.

Hi Douglas,

A new developer has been appointed today, IIUC. We want to hear something about APTX, and what the new developer is supposed to do on Dev. Team. I mean - you know the drill : "IF you can find *someone* to tell *something* ..." ;)

Well, normally I'd turn to David to tell us what he can about that, but he won't be there this weekend, so we'll have to see. I'm sure there's probably a story there, considering that it's rare for folks to go straight into the Development Team without passing through one of the other teams first...

I would like to see a episode that talks about how phpBB is better than all the other big Bulleton Boards and
how phpBB is working to be compatible with more programs, such as Mantis, Wordpress, and much more. :D

Also talk about Highway's Mods that are in development. :hello:

I don't think we should start a discussion on the fact that phpBB 'is' better (although ofcourse i do think it is..).
It is probably a good idea to discuss the comparison page.
Since many IPB, SMF and vB boards talk about this page, and on some points think the page is incorrect.
So this could be a good item.

I'm a big fan of the podcast and although have never joined in live, I listen to it regularly. I would say one thing though on a slightly negative side is that there sometimes seems to be a bit too much 'general chatter'. Don't get me wrong, I love the podcast but you could probably cut those 60min+ episodes down but keeping it a bit more on-topic.

Now as I said something a bit negative, let's be positive... I'd like hear a bit more about the phpBB philosophy on a couple of things. For example, there seemed to be a lot of giggling when talking about WYSIWYG and that phpBB is not going to become a contact management system - can someone explain the background to this? (Personally I don't want to see WYSIWYG so don't think I'm a fan).

Also I'd like to understand phpBB's reasoning behind not making certain hacks into standard features that from what I see, many members want it phpBB, like Quick Reply, mutliple ranks, topic names in viewforum and the like.

Well, to give an opposition.. I tend to not mind the "general chatter".. It can be fast forwarded through. No offense, ozental.

None taken... although sometimes with a fast-forward you can miss an interesting snippet. :)
